Huawei Mate 40 debuts on the market. Finally, after the many rumors and anticipations that have accompanied us to the last, here is finally the new range of smartphones without secrets. First, a clarification: there are three models, Mate 40, Mate 40 Pro And 40 Pro+, but only the last two will be available on our market. Both are proposed with support to the new generation networks and the strong photographic skills, as is now traditional for the series.
With theHorizon Display Huawei provides a curved screen 88° to ensure an even more immersive viewing experience. Also benefiting is the design with soft lines that make a whole front and back and that guarantees a better grip in hand.
Striking at the back is the Space Ring Design, which encloses cameras made as always in collaboration with Leica. Inside we find instead the Kirin 9000 realized with a 5nm process and a GPU that the Chinese company itself defines as "the most powerful ever seen on a Huawei device". In short, an ideal smartphone to be exploited with the display with refresh rate at 90Hz and sampling frequency at 240Hz, as well as stereo audio that returns surround sound.
The Mate 40 series arrives on the market with HMS services, the Petal Search engine, Petal Maps and the Huawei Docs suite. And there is also the second generation of the M-Pen, proposed for 99€.
Let's start from the battery: on the Mate 40 series we find a unit to 4,400mAh with 66W SuperCharge fast charging in wired mode and 50W wirelessly. Huawei ensures autonomy adapted to the exploitation of 5G networks and the potential for gaming and entertainment.
As already mentioned, it is Leica that has collaborated with Huawei for the development of cameras. On the back we find three sensors: the 50MP main is called the Ultra Vision Camera and has an f/1.9 aperture. Inside the Space Ring there is also room for the 20MP wide angle and opening f/1.8 and for the 12MP canvases with f/3.4 aperture, 5x optical zoom and optical image stabilization. The Full Pixel Octa PD AutoFocus improves image quality, and the wide angle returns distortion-free shots when you frame faces, full-length people, palaces and monuments.
There are several shooting and shooting functions and modes, including Steady Shot for 4K recording, XD Fusion HDR Engine to balance the exposure even with high contrast shots, Tracking Shot and Story Creator. Audio side the user will have at their disposal Audio Focus and Audio Zoom.
Speaking of zoom, Mate 40 Pro and Pro+ differ in:
- 40 Pros: periscopic optical lens with 10x hybrid zoom and 50x digital
- 40 Pro+: dual telephoto lens with 20x hybrid zoom and 100x digital
The Ultra Vision front camera is to be 13MP engine f/2.4, flanked by a 3D depth sensor. Selfie videos can also be recorded in 4K, and the Slow-Motion Selfie feature is also available. And if there is darkness, no problem: with the Ring Light Case you not only protect your smartphone, but you also get a front flash.
Huawei regains top of DxOMark rankings with Mate 40 Pro, which the portal calls "a dynamic range monster". 136 points totaled, which clearly detach Xiaomi Mi 10 Ultra (133 points) and Huawei's P40 Pro itself. Especially high the result in the photos, with as much as 140 points; in particular, the ability to maintain a good dynamic range even in very difficult conditions stands out, for example with little light. The balance between noise and detail preservation is also appreciated, as well as lightning and precise autofocus.
Mate 40 Pro suffers a bit compared to Mi 10 Ultra in zoom tests because it mounts only one canvas lens, and simply can't compete; it would be interesting to see what Mate 40 Pro Plus would combine, equipped on par with Xiaomi's top. Excellent performance too video side: the 116 points recorded by the smartphone are the highest result so far.
With the Smart Gesture Control the Mate 40 is controlled without touching it: just pass your hand over the display to activate it or to navigate by swiping in all directions. TheEyes on Display Dynamic it can be activated with a glance and allows you to access customizable screens with all your favorite information. So it is also possible turn down the volume with your eyes, but this feature is now available also through physical keys.
Huawei has improved the experience of using MeeTime and Multi-screen Collaboration, through which you can use multiple devices at the same time by viewing up to 3 applications via smartphone + PC. Security and Privacy Side, Mate 40 Series offers the TRUSTED EXECUTION Environment OS CC EAL5+ certified, "the highest level for microkernel on the market".
