Apple TV is coming to PlayStation: Sony has announced that the official app will be released on November 12, the day the PS5 begins to arrive in some markets (we and most of the world will have to wait an more week). It will be available on fifth and fourth generation consoles. The owners of the GameStations compatible will have access to their catalog of movies and series purchased on iTunes, and will be able to watch all the contents of the Ott Apple TV+ service.
It will also be possible to buy/rent content, manage your TV+ subscription and in general make purchases: Sony's official announcement explicitly mentions this. At other junctures - evidently when the two parties involved failed to reach an agreement on the division of revenue - in-app purchases are not available.
It's not often that Apple decides to take its services to other platforms, but it's pretty clear that in this case it's trying to expand as much as possible. It has already arrived on several operating systems for smart TVs such as Samsung Tizen and LG WebOS, for example, and it is rumoured that an Xbox app is also in development.
It won't be the only app waiting for PS5 at launch. Sony has shared the full list of multimedia apps we can expect on day one, and it's composed as follows:
- Apple TV
- Disney Plus
- Netflix
- Spotify
- Twitch
- Youtube
